Understanding the Term “Detox” The word detox can make us thinks of several types of fasts or cleanses; because of this, it is important that we make known the true definition of detox and how to achieve it.
In the world of Functional Medicine, the word detox refers to the process of reducing the body’s toxic load while simultaneously promoting efficient elimination of toxins from the body through nutrition and lifestyle strategies. We make this a goal due to the negative effects of toxin overload on our health. Concerns that may arise due to toxin overload include: difficulty concentrating, mood swings, lack of energy/fatigue, difficulty sleeping, bloating, occasional digestive discomfort, difficulty losing weight, etc.
How It Works Throughout the four weeks, the body is provided with adequate fuel that is needed for cleansing. In order to accomplish this, we focus on the consumption of certain foods while others are taken out. In addition, we incorporate supplements to provide extra nutrients to equip the body for enhanced detoxification. We also discuss cutting out toxins from other areas of our lives – food isn’t our only source of toxin exposure!
